What is Snuba?
The Snuba excursion in St. Maarten is a professionally guided, shallow water diving program available to snorkelers and novice divers of all ages. It does not require formal training. The program is safe, easy and an appealing introduction to the underwater world. It also makes guests wonder and increases marine awareness and environmental conservancy.
Snuba's tagline ”Go beyond snorkeling” perfectly describes this adventure. The equipment and program allow guests to explore underwater using a 20ft airline. It is the ultimate ”soft adventure”.
The boat Overtaker
The main boat we run Snuba off of in St. Maarten is a 34 foot former cruise ship rescue vessel that has been equipped with ladders, a Snuba platform and side exits. As we mentioned above, it is also equipped with fresh water rinse, music and is fully shaded. It is a comfortable boat to hang out on when you are waiting for your turn. With a powerful diesel engine, brand new cabling, new steering, new everything, she cruises with a speed of about 9 knots and complies with US coastguard inspection standards. An experienced Captain makes this part of the tour complete.
The equipment
Snuba Squad is made from durable material and contains two tanks of breathing air to support a group of 4 persons to do the 25-30 minutes underwater excursion to a maximum of 6 meters (20 ft). The 6 meters (20 ft) long hose is color coded to make it easier for participants to stay in formation and it is made of a very strong material to be reliable. The harness which you will wear is connected to the Quad (via the long hose) and ensures breathing air. The dive mask and diving fins also support your underwater adventure. A weight belt is also necessary to compensate for our natural tendency to float. It will not pull you down to the bottom, but will make you neutral.
Important: It is not allowed to consume alcohol before joining this activity. Snuba is considered a dive activity so if one of the following apply, a doctor's letter is required to participate: pregnancy, recent surgery, high blood pressure, epilepsy, seizures or asthma.
Also, please note that the minimum age for Snuba is 8 years.
Royal Caribbean or Carnival Cruise Lines passengers must book the Snuba shore excursion in St. Maarten through their cruise line.
