Boka Sint Michiel is a quiet coastal bay on the southwest side of Curaçao known for its laid-back local vibe, calm turquoise water, and small fishing pier. It’s a peaceful spot where you can snorkel straight from shore or watch the sunset with a cold drink. Though often confused with nearby Boka Sami, this little cove has its own authentic charm — simple, scenic, and perfectly Curaçaoan.
Tucked into the southwest coast of Curaçao, the tranquil bay of Boka Sint Michiel (often labeled “Boka Sami” on maps) offers a laid-back escape from the more crowded resort beaches. With a modest pier, calm turquoise water and a backdrop of gently rising hills, it struck me early on as the kind of place where the island feels un-hurried and real.

The setting is part old fishing village and part nature retreat — locals still unload boats, the shoreline is lightly developed, and the reef lies right off the coast, allowing snorkelers and shore-divers to slip in easily.
Boka Sint Michiel may be small, but it’s one of the best places in Curaçao to enjoy snorkeling, shore diving, and local culture without crowds. The calm water, nearby nature trails, and authentic fishing village atmosphere make it a perfect half-day stop.

Perched above the bay, the old Fort Sint Michiel offers one of the best panoramic views on Curaçao’s west coast. The short hike is easy but exposed, so go early or late in the day for cooler weather and softer light. It's a bit overgrown with cactus and other plants with thorns so be prepared.
Just west of the pier, Snake Bay (Playa Wachi) is one of Curaçao’s top shore-diving and snorkeling spots. The reef starts close to shore, with coral gardens, brain coral, parrotfish, and eels — the bay’s namesake — all easy to spot in clear, calm water.

Behind the beach lies a quiet lagoon and salt marsh where you can often see flamingos and herons feeding in the shallows. It’s a peaceful, wind-cooled walk, perfect for photos or a short break from the sun. Go early morning or just before sunset for the best light and colors — it’s a taste of Curaçao’s wild side just minutes from town.
Aquafari Curaçao runs guided underwater scooter tours from the Boka Sami–Sint Michiel area. These easy “sea scooters” glide you through coral reefs without needing diving certification — a great option if you want to explore deeper than snorkeling allows.
The pier at Boka Sint Michiel is the perfect spot to end your day with locals. Bring a cold drink or grab something from a nearby local beach bar and enjoy one of the most peaceful sunsets in Curaçao — without the crowds of resort beaches.
Boka Sint Michiel is one of Curaçao’s best-kept snorkeling secrets. The reef sits close to shore, the water is calm and clear, and there’s easy access straight from the beach or pier. If you’re looking for easy shore snorkeling in Curaçao, this is one of the top spots — especially for spotting marine life in a quiet, natural setting.

The right-hand side of the bay, near the rocky cliffs toward Blue Bay, has the best visibility and coral cover. You’ll find hard and soft corals, sea fans, and plenty of reef fish just a few meters from shore.
Another good area is west of the pier, where the reef drops slightly deeper — it’s popular with divers and known locally as Snake Bay (Slangenbaai). Stronger swimmers can explore along the coast toward Kaap Mal Meeuw, where the underwater wall is more dramatic but currents can be stronger.
The reef here feels alive. Expect to see parrotfish, trumpetfish, butterflyfish, sergeant majors, and garden eels in the sandy patches. If you venture farther out, you may spot larger species like barracuda or a lazy sea turtle passing by. The name “Snake Bay” comes from the many garden eels that poke their heads from the sand — an amazing sight on calm days with good visibility.
Morning is best for snorkeling, when the sea is calmest and visibility highest.
There’s no direct rental hut on the beach, but dive shops in Blue Bay and Kokomo (about 5–10 minutes away) rent masks, fins, and snorkel sets. Some hotels in the Sint Michiel area also lend basic gear to guests. You may try renting at Boca Beach Oceanclub right on the beach, but I am not sure if they do.
Boka Sint Michiel is one of Curaçao’s most underrated snorkeling spots. The reef is healthy, the entry is easy, and you often have the bay to yourself — especially on weekday mornings. It doesn’t have the polished look of resort beaches, but that’s exactly why I love it. It feels real, local, and unspoiled. If you’re chasing marine life instead of cocktails, this is the place to bring your mask and go slow.

Set on the left side of Boka Sint Michiel Beach, Boca Beach Oceanclub is known for its relaxed atmosphere and tables placed right in the shallow water — perfect for cooling off between bites. The bar serves cold drinks, snacks, and daily seafood specials, and it doubles as a dive center offering certification courses and gear rentals.
Just a short walk from the bay, Morty’s Place serves hearty home-style Caribbean dishes in a casual roadside setting. The portions are generous, the prices fair, and the flavors pure island comfort. It’s a great option if the beach bars are full or you’re craving a proper sit-down meal after a long swim — simple food, cooked with care, and always served with a smile.
