Cas Abao Beach, Curaçao is one of those rare Caribbean spots that actually lives up to the postcard pictures. Located on the island’s quieter west coast, it’s famous for its soft white sand, turquoise water, and gentle waves perfect for swimming or snorkeling right from shore. The calm vibe, good facilities, and stunning natural scenery make Cas Abao Beach one of my favorite places to spend an unhurried day in Curaçao.

Overview

Cas Abao Beach is often described as one of the most beautiful beaches in Curaçao — and after visiting several times, I completely agree. The drive itself, about halfway between Willemstad and Westpunt, winds through rolling hills before revealing a stretch of powdery white sand and perfectly clear turquoise water.

Cas Abao Beach Curacao

I like that Cas Abao combines the best of both worlds: it feels secluded and natural, yet offers all the practical comforts you’d want for a full day at the beach. The beach is privately managed, clean, and well-maintained. It has restrooms, a snack bar, dive shop, and shaded palapas available for rent.

Cas Abao Beach Curacao

Families usually gather closer to the snack bar, while couples and solo travelers (like myself) tend to spread out toward the quieter ends. Even during weekends, it never felt overcrowded — just lively enough to feel safe and social.

Cas Abao Beach Curacao prices and entrance fee

Entry costs about $6 per car on weekdays and $7 on weekends (2025 prices), which includes access to showers and restrooms. The beach opens daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and most people stay for the full day.

Best time to visit Cas Abao Beach

  • Time of day: Early morning or late afternoon for softer light and fewer crowds.
  • Season: Year-round swimming; the dry season (January–September) has calmer seas and clearer water.
  • Weekdays vs. weekends: Weekdays are quieter; weekends attract more locals and tour groups.
  • Weather-wise: Expect steady sunshine and minimal rain except in October–December, when brief showers may occur.

Tips for visiting Cas Abao Beach

  • Arrive early to get a shaded palapa — they go fast by 10 a.m.
  • Bring small cash for the entrance fee and rentals (cards aren’t always accepted).
  • The bar closes around 5 p.m., so grab your last drink before then.
  • Drive carefully: the access road has a few potholes near the entrance.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen; the water clarity here makes sunburn sneak up on you.
  • Avoid feeding fish near swimmers to keep the water calm and clear.

What to bring to Cas Abao Beach

  • Snorkel mask and fins – reef access starts close to shore.
  • Beach towel and lightweight blanket – soft sand but limited lounge chairs.
  • Dry bag – for valuables when swimming.
  • Reusable water bottle – shade is limited, so hydration matters.
  • Flip-flops or water shoes – small coral bits near the waterline.
  • Snacks or picnic items – though the snack bar covers basics, options are limited.

Things to do at Cas Abao Beach

Cas Abao Beach is one of the best all-around beaches in Curaçao for swimming, snorkeling, and diving in crystal-clear Caribbean waters. The powdery white sand, calm sea, and excellent facilities make it a perfect full-day destination for solo travelers, couples, and families alike. Here are the best things to do at Cas Abao Beach Curacao:

Snorkeling along the reef edge

The coral reef at Cas Abao Beach Curaçao begins just a few meters from shore, making it one of the easiest and most rewarding snorkeling spots on the island. The best area is along the right-hand side of the bay, where the reef gradually drops off into deeper water filled with parrotfish, angelfish, and blue tangs.

Freediving with B Diving & Watersports

For those who want to explore deeper without tanks, freediving at Cas Abao Beach is an unforgettable experience. The on-site dive center, B Diving & Watersports Curaçao, offers professional freediving courses and guided dives suitable for all levels.

Scuba diving at Cas Abao Beach

Cas Abao is also a favorite shore diving site for both beginners and certified divers. The same dive center, B Diving & Watersports Curaçao, operates right on the beach, providing full gear rental, tanks, and guided dives. The house reef starts in shallow water and slopes down to about 100 feet, filled with sponges, sea fans, and reef fish. Visibility often exceeds 30 meters.

Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding

Kayak and paddle board rental at Cas Abao Beach Curacao

If you prefer to stay on the surface, rent a kayak or SUP board directly on the beach and explore the coastline. The calm conditions in the morning are ideal for paddling past the cliffs and shallow coral patches while spotting fish beneath the surface.

Relaxing under the palm trees and palapas

After a dive or swim, nothing beats unwinding under one of Cas Abao’s palm-shaded palapas. You can rent lounge chairs for around $5–$6 per day and enjoy the view from the quieter ends of the beach. The sand is soft, the water warm, and the atmosphere peaceful — exactly what most visitors come here for.

Beach massages and wellness hut

Next to the main entrance, a small ocean-view massage hut offers 30- and 60-minute treatments using coconut oil and local aloe. The combination of sea breeze and soft waves make it one of the most relaxing experiences on Curaçao.

Snorkeling at Cas Abao Beach

Snorkeling at Cas Abao Beach Curaçao is one of the top underwater experiences on the island’s west coast. What makes this spot special is how accessible it is. No need for a boat or tour, the coral reef begins just a few meters from shore. Cas Abao Beach snorkeling offers crystal-clear visibility and calm water ideal for beginners and experienced snorkelers alike.

Where to snorkel: the best snorkeling spots at Cas Abao Beach

The right-hand side of the bay is where the Cas Abao reef really comes to life. Enter near the rocky edge and swim along the drop-off, which starts at about 3–5 meters and slopes down into deeper blue water.

Cas Abao Beach Curacao snorkeling

The left side also has some coral, but visibility and marine life are consistently better on the right. The calm currents make it easy to explore for long stretches without much effort.

If you swim about 100 meters out, you’ll reach a wall covered in sponges and brain coral — it’s the same reef used by scuba divers, but still shallow enough for snorkelers. I’ve also found small schools of squid hanging in the midwater here, especially in the mornings.

What you will see underwater

The reef at Cas Abao Beach is home to parrotfish, butterflyfish, trumpetfish, sergeant majors, and the occasional turtle or moray eel hiding in the coral. Look closely and you might spot cleaner shrimp or tiny blennies poking from the rocks. The coral itself is in good health compared to many beaches, with colorful sponges, sea fans, and star coral colonies stretching out toward the deeper reef.

Best time to snorkel at Cas Abao Beach

  • Morning (8–10 a.m.): The best visibility, fewer swimmers, and a higher chance of spotting turtles.
  • Midday (10 a.m.–2 p.m.): Brighter light for photography but also more crowds.
  • Afternoon: Slightly choppier water due to wind; stay near the reef’s edge.
  • Season: Year-round snorkeling, but the dry season (January–September) offers calmer seas and the clearest water.

Safety tips and snorkeling guide

  • Use a snorkel vest or flotation device if you’re not a strong swimmer.
  • Avoid standing on or touching coral
  • Swim parallel to shore to stay within the calmest zone.
  • Watch for boat traffic near the outer reef; stay inside the buoy line.
  • Apply reef-safe sunscreen before entering the water.
  • Bring a buddy or snorkel with other swimmers for safety.
  • If visibility drops, wait a few minutes — it usually clears quickly once currents settle.

Snorkel gear rental at Cas Abao Beach

If you don’t have your own gear, you can rent snorkel equipment directly at the dive shop on the beach — B Diving & Watersports Curaçao. They offer masks, fins, snorkels, and even underwater cameras. Prices are reasonable, and the staff can point out the best entry spots and current conditions before you head in.

My personal honest opinion

I’ve snorkeled at many beaches around Curaçao, but Cas Abao always stands out. The water clarity is outstanding, the reef feels alive, and it’s incredibly convenient — you can park, grab your gear, and be in the water within minutes.

It’s safe, easy to access, and beautiful both above and below the surface. Whether you’re a beginner with a rental mask or a seasoned snorkeler with your own kit, Cas Abao Beach offers one of the best snorkeling experiences in Curaçao.

Restaurants & bars at Cas Abao Beach

The on-site beach bar and restaurant at Cas Abao Beach serves burgers, fries, saté, salads and sandwiches, along with frozen cocktails, smoothies, beer and soft drinks. The bar is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (closes 1 hour before the beach). While food and drinks were available, service can be slow at peak times. Alternatively, there is a better restaurant near the road entrance to Cas Abao.

Bistro e Lanternu

Located near the road entrance to Cas Abao (in Fontein/Bisento), Bistro e Lanternu is a cozy, well-reviewed bistro offering more refined dining compared to the beach bar. Guests rave about dishes like beef tenderloin, shrimp skewers and homemade desserts.
