Have you ever wished to have a whole Caribbean beach just to yourself? Well, look no further, the secluded Burgeaux Bay Beach in Sint Maarten is unknown even to many of the locals. Unfortunately, the reason behind this is nothing exciting, the beach itself is just utterly insignificant.
There is not much reason to recommend visiting Burgeaux Bay Beach. And if there is one person you should trust on this, that’s me. When I first moved to Sint Maarten back in 2012, I lived 50 meters from this beach and only visited it twice. There is almost no sand, no shade, and the rocky shoreline with all the sea urchins makes getting into the water difficult.
The thing is, just a few minutes from Burgeaux Bay Beach you have all sorts of much better options. Maho Beach with all the excitement, shopping and restaurants is just across the parking lot. While Simpson Bay Beach, which is much nicer and also never crowded, is just around the cliff. And let’s not even talk about Mullet Bay Beach…
If you are able to find a patch of sand in the cove, you can lay down your towels for sunbathing and that’s pretty much it. Perhaps you can pass the time by walking down the beach and look for shells to collect.
If you can get into the water without stepping on a sea urchin, then Burgeaux Bay Beach is suitable for swimming as well. Put on your snorkeling gear as you may find some decent snorkeling if you follow the coastline towards Sunset Beach Bar.
For other activities, you may walk over to Maho Beach to spot the planes landing at Princess Juliana International Airport, do some shopping in Maho Village or even gamble at Casino Royale. You can also play some golf or enjoy spa treatments near Burgeaux Bay Beach.
Burgeaux Bay might be ideal for couples as well who want to watch the sunset from the rocks in privacy.
The nearby Maho Village offer plenty of options. If you want to stay and eat on Burgeaux Bay, then head to Maho Market, buy some sandwiches and cold drinks and have a picnic on the beach. Dinghy’s Bar in Simpson Bay is also within walking distance.
Burgeaux Bay Beach is surrounded by beachfront villas and vacation rentals that you can rent on Airbnb or Vrbo. It’s actually a great and safe place to stay. If you are looking for all-inclusive hotels, Morgan Beach Resort and Spa is right behind the beach, while Sonesta Maho Beach, Ocean Point and Royal Islander is just a few hundred meters away.
It’s easy to find Burgeaux Bay Beach, you just have to follow directions to Maho Beach and once you reach Sunset Beach Bar take a left and enter Beacon Hill.
Driving to Burgeaux Bay Beach
From Oyster Pond, follow the road to Philipsburg, then onto Cole Bay, where you need to take a left. Cross Simpson Bay and drive along the Princess Juliana Airport Runway until you reach the roundabout in Maho Village. Pass in front of Maho Beach, and as explained above, take a left at the end.
From Orient Beach, drive along the scenic western coast of St. Martin passing through Grand Case and Marigot. Once in Marigot, continue through Nettle Bay and the lowlands of the French side until you arrive to Maho Beach.
Public transport to Burgeaux Bay Beach
You have to catch a bus that’s heading to Maho or Mullet. Their destination is written on a sign behind the windshield. You can reach Maho by public transport from Philipsburg, Simpson Bay, Cole Bay and Marigot. Make sure to have cash on you!
Taxi to Burgeaux Bay Beach
I’m not sure if the taxi driver will know this beach so just ask them to take you to Maho Beach. It should cost you around $50-60 USD from Oyster Pont or Orient Beach, while from Philipsburg and Marigot expect the rate to eb around $35-40 USD. From Simpson Bay, it should not cost you more than $20 USD one-way.
Parking near Burgeaux Bay Beach
There is plenty of parking space in Beacon Hill, the area where the beach is located. It’s also safe to leave your car behind but don’t leave anything valuable inside.
There, you have it, probably the most detailed and true to life guide on visiting Burgeaux Bay Beach. While this beach does not offer anything exciting, if your sole plan is to get a nice tan while no one is watching, this may be a tropical paradise for you.
Burgeaux Bay Beach is located on the Dutch side of St. Maarten, an island in the Caribbean that belongs to the Dutch Kingdom. It is tucked between Maho Beach and Simpson Bay Beach.
Not at all. Even the majority of the locals have no idea where it is.
It's about 30 minutes by taxi if there is no traffic but in peak season it can easily take even 1,5 hour, especially if the bridge in Simpson Bay goes up.
Yes, you will find everything you might need in the nearby Maho Village.
It's not too bad, just watch out for the sea urchins when going into and coming out of the Caribbean Sea.
