Check-in at 7:30 am at Bobby's Marina in Philipsburg and board the Great Bay Express to St. Eustatius, also known as Statia. Enjoy complimentary soft drinks during the 2-hour scenic ride.
After disembarking the ferry on Statia, you will find yourself in downtown Oranjestad, the capital of St. Eustatius. There are taxis readily available to take you around and you can sign up for diving at the nearby dive shops (prior reservations are highly recommended). Hike up to the famous volcano called the Quill or visit the St. Eustatius museum.
St. Eustatius is the most remote destination you can visit in a day trip from St. Maarten by ferry. It might look like a sleepy Caribbean island but it used to be the world's busiest seaport for cargo between Europe and the Americas in the 18th century.
With only 3,600 citizens, there are no strangers on the island, even day tripping visitors are welcomed as friends. Statia's tourism is minimal compared to the surrounding islands. The island is mostly visited by intrepid scuba divers and nature lovers exploring its rugged, volcanic terrain, best know for the Quill, a dormant volcano, which is also the highest peak in the island. The unique biodiversity around the volcano is what makes it a special ecological feature. On top of that, a lot of tourists flock here to hike or enjoy some birding opportunities.
Important: The schedule changes every month according to demand. You normally cannot do a day trip to St. Eustatius. If you want to go and come back by ferry, you usually have to stay overnight for 2 days. Alternatively, you can fly back with WinAir.
