Philipsburg, Sint Maarten — On September 7, 2025, at about 1:30 PM local time, a WestJet Boeing 737-800 arriving from Toronto made a forceful touchdown on Runway 10 at Princess Juliana International Airport. The jet’s right landing gear collapsed under the stress, causing the aircraft to skid down the runway. Smoke was seen emanating from the right engine as it scraped along the pavement.
Emergency teams responded immediately, applying fire-retarding foam around the aircraft while the crew activated the emergency evacuation slides. All passengers and crew were safely evacuated and escorted to the terminal; thankfully, no injuries were reported.
With the plane immobilized on the runway, the airport was forced to suspend operations. Incoming flights were diverted elsewhere, while outbound services were delayed or canceled until the runway could be cleared and assessed for damage.
The Sint Maarten Civil Aviation Authority has launched an investigation into the incident, with assistance anticipated from both WestJet and Boeing. The probe will examine flight data, maintenance logs, and weather conditions to determine why the landing gear failed.
In a statement, WestJet commended the flight and cabin crew for their swift, professional actions during the evacuation and pledged full cooperation with authorities.
This remains a developing story; further updates will follow as more details emerge from the investigation and airport authorities.
