The only guide you need for a day trip to Klein Curaçao

History of Klein Curacao

Years ago, locals brought goats to Klein Curacao, which led to the desertification of the island. Besides this, phosphate was mined from the island and exported to various European countries. Once the phosphate reserves depleted, the level of the island dropped, which had more implications than it was initially expected. The decreased level of the island contributed to the lowering amount of sea birds. Klein Curacao was also home the the Caribbean’s largest monk seal population.

Klein Curacai was also a part of the slave trade. The Dutch West India Company brought many slaves from Africa to Curacao. They set up a quarantine for the sick slaves on the island. The remains of the first quarantine building can still be found on the island. You can find many graves on Klein Curacao as the slaves, as well as the other crew members and passengers aboard the slave ships who did not survive the voyage, were buried on the island.

A hot spot for wildlife

One of the best snorkeling spots and underwater caves in the area are around Klein Curaçao, a hot spot for wildlife. Watch the vibrant marine life and explore the colorful coral reefs! There are several shipwrecks to explore around as well. Dolphins and flying fish can also be spotted at remote areas. Most of the time the trips offer the chance to swim with sea turtles. Given the abundance of wildlife around, the island was designated as a protected Ramsar site in 2018.

Swim with turtles in Klein Curacao and explore the best snorkeling spots

Escape into tranquility

A mile long pristine, white sand beach awaits you on Klein Curaçao if you’re just looking for some peaceful moments. You can take an easy walk to the historic lighthouse, an iconic sight of the island or the enormous Maria Bianca Guidesman shipwreck on the eastern coast. Other than some coconut palms, the island has little vegetation. However, if you’re looking for some shade, there are some palm frond covered sheds for day trippers.

Choose your excursion wisely

Day trips to Klein Curaçao are usually quite long, they take about 9 hours, with the exception of powerboat tours that take 5 and a half hours. Given the fact that it’s an uninhabited island, it’s better to be safe and choose a trip where you’ll be provided with all necessary amenities, especially when travelling with kids.

You can opt for a one-day organized excursion that includes snorkeling activities at the best spots and provide you with snorkel gear or diving equipment. As this is an uninhabited island, we recommend choosing a trip where lunch and drinks are included. Our choice is a day trip by catamaran that leaves every day except for Saturday with an open bar, vegetarian options and it’s perfect for kids.
