Squeezed between a towering mountain and the ocean lies Puerto Plata, the oldest city on the north coast. Its picturesque landscape combines sea, lush valleys, rivers, and a multitude of beaches while underneath the mountains rests the world’s clearest amber.
Whether you stay in one of the luxury all-inclusive resorts or arrive by cruise ship to the Amber Cove cruise terminal, there are plenty of things to do in Puerto Plata. Take in the beautiful panoramic view of the city atop of Mount Isabel accessible by the Caribbean’s only cable car called the Teleférico. Walk down the Malecón along the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the colonial fortress of San Felipe built in 1577. Wander around Victorian-style houses in the city center and pay a visit to the Amber Museum showcasing the oldest amber fossils in the world. Take a boat trip and snorkel at Cayo Arena, swim with dolphins at the Ocean World Marina or take on the Dominican Republic’s greatest adventure with a canyoning tour to the 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua.
Travel east and you will find Sosúa, a sleepy beach town that truly comes alive at night. A bit further on arrive to Cabarete, a world famous hub for windsurfing, surfing, and kiteboarding, and a favorite cosmopolitan hideout of snowbirds. Puerto Plata may not be the tourism capital of the Dominican Republic anymore, but people looking for a more diverse landscape and sorts of activities will find it more appealing than the overdeveloped Punta Cana and Bavaro resort towns.
