St. Maarten's #1 attraction

The world-renowned Maho Beach St. Maarten is also known as Sunset Beach or Airport Beach. It attracts over 1 million tourists annually to watch airplanes fly over their heads as they land at the nearby Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM). Standing on the beach as giant planes pass right over your head is unlike anything else you’ll experience in the Caribbean!

Best time to visit Maho Beach

The magic of Maho depends on timing. On busy cruise ship days, the beach can get uncomfortably packed. Always check the Port of St. Maarten cruise ship schedule first when planning your visit to Maho Beach SXM. Fewer ships in port means fewer crowds and a better view.

Next, look at the Princess Juliana International Airport arrival board. The big jets from KLM, Air France, and the North American carriers are the real stars — and they usually arrive in the afternoon. Smaller regional planes land throughout the day, but they don’t have the same wow factor.

History of Maho Beach

The airport was originally built by the U.S. Army during World War II as a hub for searching for German submarines. The high mountains of St. Maarten left few options for building an airport, except for a narrow sandbar along Simpson Bay Lagoon, which is why the airport has its unique attributes.

Maho Beach St. Maarten

Over the years, as more and bigger commercial aircrafts headed to Sint Maarten, the runway had to be extended by reclaiming land from the lagoon. The short runway and dramatic low approaches have earned SXM a reputation as one of the world’s most dangerous airports.

Believe it or not...

... even a Concorde landed over Maho Beach

Planes fly as low as 100 feet (30 meters) above ground level. Back in the old days, pilots were even competing with each other to see who could fly the lowest. As it became a serious security concern for beach goers, the beginning of the runway was moved a bit further inland.

Today, spotting airplanes at Maho Beach is the number one thing to do in St. Maarten. It is also the most photographed airport in the world - nothing beats a photo of a jet flying just 100 feet overhead at Maho Beach SXM.

Videos of planes landing over Maho Beach

Before you even pack your bags, dive into the countless videos online showing the jaw-dropping landings at Maho Beach. These clips capture the thrill and excitement of the planes' descent to Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) so close to the beach, it will give you a taste of what to expect.

Is Maho Beach safe?

Yes, Maho Beach is safe as long as you use common sense and you only watch the planes land. Experiencing the jet blast of the departing planes is part of the Maho Beach Experience. However, you should be aware that the jet blast can easily knock people over. In fact, the Maho Beach accident in 2017 caused a 57-year-old woman from New Zealand to die when she was blown away by Caribbean Airlines Flight 457, causing her head to hit the concrete.

If you Google “world's most dangerous airport”, the Princess Juliana International Airport will be on every single list, guaranteed. This is because it is difficult to land on a relatively short runway, which is no longer than 7,100 feet (2165 meters). It is bordered by the sea on one side and large mountains on the other.

The low approach pushes larger planes to their limits, which requires the most skilled pilots. Nevertheless, aircrafts as big as KLM's Boeing 747 have regularly flown to Sint Maarten until October 28, 2016, when the flight was replaced by a smaller Airbus A330.

Changing beach conditions

One thing to know: The sand at Maho Beach changes with the season. After storms, waves often wash the sand away, leaving rocks exposed. Don’t worry, the beach usually rebuilds itself naturally in a matter of days or weeks.

Tips for visiting Maho Beach

These are some of the most important things to know before visiting Maho Beach:

  • Check flight times: Big jets like KLM and Air France usually land in the afternoon — that’s the real show.
  • Avoid the fence: Jet blasts during takeoff are powerful and dangerous. Watch from a safe distance instead.
  • Protect your stuff: Hold on to hats, towels, and bags — the wind from planes can send them flying.
  • Combine with another beach: For swimming or snorkeling, pair your visit with nearby Mullet Bay.
  • Avoid peak traffic hours (late afternoon) when everyone’s heading to or from the airport.
  • Always leave extra time to get back if you’re on a cruise — traffic in Simpson Bay can back up REAL badly.

What to bring

  • Cash: Some beach bars and shops don’t always accept cards.
  • Light bag: It’s a busy beach, so keep valuables to a minimum.
  • Snorkel gear: While Maho itself isn’t ideal for snorkeling, you might want it if you’re heading to nearby Mullet Bay. Rentals aren’t usually available right on Maho.
  • Sunscreen & hat: Shade is limited, and the Caribbean sun is strong.
  • Water shoes or flip-flops: The sand can get hot and a bit rough with shells.
  • Camera or phone with a good zoom: To capture those low-flying jets.
  • Beach towel or mat: Loungers are limited and usually for paying bar customers.

Things to do at Maho Beach

When it comes to things to do at Maho Beach, the options go far beyond watching planes land. This lively stretch of sand offers plenty of activities, entertainment, and places to relax, making it one of the most exciting beaches in St. Maarten.

Plane spotting

The main reason people come to Maho Beach St. Maarten is, of course, for plane spotting — watching jets land and take off just overhead.. The big jets are the real show — KLM, Air France, American, Delta, and JetBlue flights are crowd favorites. One of the best places to watch planes at Maho Beach is right in front of Sunset Bar & Grill.

My tip: Check the airport arrival schedule before you go, or stop by Sunset Bar & Grill, where they keep the daily flight times written on a surfboard.

Maho Beach webcams for online plane spotting

There are also a couple of live Maho Beach webcams at Sunset Bar & Grill and Tortuga Beach Bar, perfect for checking flight arrivals online.

Feel the jet blast (with caution)

Standing behind a departing plane is part of the jet blast Maho Beach experience — but it’s also risky. The jet blast can send sand, rocks, and even people flying. I’ll admit, the rush of wind is wild, but personally I don’t recommend holding the fence. Watch from the side or further back on the beach, and you’ll still feel the force without the danger.

Grab a drink with a view

Two beach bars dominate the scene at Maho Beach:

  • Sunset Bar & Grill – The most famous hangout, with a pool, live music, and that surfboard with flight times. Order a cold Presidente or a rum punch and settle in.
  • Driftwood Boat Bar – A more casual spot on the other end of the beach. It’s smaller, but I like it for being less touristy.

Both places let you enjoy the action with a drink in hand — which is the smartest way to experience Maho.

Cliff diving behind the Sonesta Ocean Point Resort

You can go cliff jumping at Maho Beach behind Sonesta Ocean Point. Note that the security guard will probably stop you from entering the premises from Maho Beach, so act like a hotel guest. If that doesn’t work, you can still swim to the second cabana-looking terrace and climb up the cliff. You can pick the height anywhere between just a few feet up to 30 feet (10 meters).

Shopping & souvenirs

Maho Village shopping offers everything you need when visiting Maho Beach. You will find local crafts, designer goods and souvenirs at the Maho Beach shops. Maho Village has everything you would expect from any touristy place, including a pharmacy should you need one.

You can purchase souvenirs at several outlets, the most famous being the Shipwreck Shop, and even at the Maho Market grocery store. I recommend checking out Sunset Beach Bar’s own store, where you can buy some souvenirs that are not available anywhere else on the island.

There are many jewelers on the street towards Mullet Bay. The highest-rated one is Jewels & Beyond, but make sure you take a look at J. N. Jewelers as well.

Golfing near Maho Village

The Mullet Bay Golf Course, designed by Joseph Lee, lets you tee off in paradise on an 18-hole golf terrain surrounded by a beautiful tropical setting. The course is located at 28 Rhine Road, just minutes from Maho Beach SXM. For more information on green fees, tee times and contact details, visit the St. Maarten Golf Association’s website.

Day pass at Sonesta Maho Beach Resort Casino & Spa

If you want to take the day easy, book a day pass at Sonesta Maho Beach Resort Casino & Spa for a day. This ten-acre beachfront kid-friendly property features the Oasis Pool with a swim-up bar and waterslides, an aqua park for kids, and all sorts of bars and restaurants.

The hotel welcomes visitors between 9 AM to 5 PM, and prices start from $89 USD for adults and $45 USD for kids between 6 and 12 years. Children below 6 enter for free. The price includes all-you-can-eat food and alcoholic drinks.

Gambling at Casino Royale

Did your trip to St. Maarten cost you a fortune? Don’t worry; you can win back the cost of your vacation! Located in the heart of Maho Village, Casino Royale St. Maarten is the island’s largest casino. It has over 300 slot machines, electronic roulette, 21 tables, a poker room, sports betting options, and daily shows.

Spa treatments

In case you lose it all in the casino and you need some peace and quiet to rethink your life choices, book a massage or spa treatments at Maho Beach. There are some therapists who offer beach massages but given the business of Maho Beach, it would not be a relaxing experience.

Snorkeling at Maho Beach

Maho Beach snorkeling isn’t the main attraction here. But if you’re already here with mask and fins, there are two spots you should try:

  1. When snorkeling at Maho Beach, go behind Sunset Bar, where the reef is home to some colorful fish and corals.
  2. On the right side of Maho Beach, just around the cliff at Sonesta Resort, there is some decent snorkeling. It is only recommended for good swimmers!

Bonus idea: Try snorkeling right in front of Maho Beach. The jet blasts often send people’s belongings flying into the water. I’ve actually found a few pairs of sunglasses down there myself. This is also the best place to spot stingrays in the sand.

Restaurants & bars at Maho Beach

If you’re wondering where to eat near Maho Beach, Maho Village is packed with lively restaurants and bars. From casual beach shacks to upscale dining, there’s no shortage of Maho Beach restaurants to choose from.

It’s not the cheapest neighborhood, though (think $5–10 USD for a beer), so if you’d rather save, grab some ice-cold Presidente from Maho Market on 1 Rhine Road and enjoy them right on the sand.

Sunset Bar & Grill

The most iconic Maho Beach bar. Order a burger, ribs, or fresh fish, grab a cold beer, and watch the planes roar overhead from the open-air deck. It’s casual, loud, and part of the full Maho experience. You can listen to the radio transmission between the planes and the control tower - a truly unique SXM experience!

Driftwood Boat Bar

A beached wooden boat turned bar right at the edge of the sand. Driftwood Boat Bar is another classic bar near Maho Beach, with a laid-back local vibe. It feels like a local hangout, and the prices are friendlier than most in the area.

JAX Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar

For when you want something a little fancier, JAX in Maho Village St. Maarten serves prime steaks, craft cocktails, and a more polished setting. It's one of the best restaurants near Maho Beach for a nicer dinner.

Sublime Restaurant

newer addition to the Maho Village restaurants, Sublime mixes Caribbean flavors with international tapas-style dining. Great for tapas-style dining and cocktails if you want a more upscale alternative to the beach bars.

Roma Restaurant – Cucina Italiana & Artisan Pizza

Roma Restaurant is one of the go-to Maho Beach restaurants if you’re craving Italian comfort food. From wood-fired artisan pizzas to homemade pasta, Roma is a solid choice if you’re craving something familiar after days of island fare.

The Hole in the Wall

The Hole in the Wall is a pub-style spot that’s part of the Maho Village nightlife scene, with live music and hearty food. A friendly pub-style restaurant with hearty portions, live music, and a welcoming vibe.

Beer Garden SXM

Beer Garden SXM is popular among Maho Beach bars thanks to its rotating craft beers and chill open-air setup. It’s perfect if you want to sample something beyond Presidente while hanging out with friends.

3 Amigos

3 Amigos is the liveliest of the Maho Village restaurants, serving Tex-Mex favorites and giant margaritas late into the night.

Hotels & villas near Maho Beach

Staying at hotels near Maho Beach St. Maarten means you’re in the heart of the action — planes overhead, bars and restaurants a few steps away, and nightlife at your doorstep. Here are the best picks depending on your style:

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, Casino & Spa

One of the largest all-inclusive Maho Beach resorts and the only one directly the beach. Families love it for the kids’ club, aqua park, and multiple dining options. If you want convenience and non-stop energy, this is it, however, it does not have the best reviews.

Sonesta Ocean Point Resort

Right next door, this adults-only, all-suite resort is one of the best hotels near Maho Beach St. Maarten. Think infinity pools, swim-up suites, and cliffside views of the planes landing. It’s quieter and more upscale than the family-friendly Sonesta, but you still get access to both properties.

The Morgan Resort & Spa

Just a short walk from the beach, The Morgan Resort St. Maarten is known for its stunning infinity pool overlooking the runway. Rooms are chic and contemporary, and the on-site restaurant is excellent. Perfect if you want luxury without being right on the sand.

Royal Islander Club La Plage

For travelers searching for Maho Beach accommodation with kitchens, this condo-style resort is a solid mid-range choice. You’ll still be close to all the action, but with a bit more of a “home away from home” vibe.

El Zafiro Boutique Hotel

This is one of the best boutique hotels near Maho Beach, offering a quieter stay while keeping you close to the action. A good pick if you like more personal service and fewer crowds, only 10 minutes away in Simpson Bay Beach.

Budget tip: Airbnb & guesthouses

If you’re after budget hotels near Maho Beach, the best option is to look just outside Maho in Simpson Bay, where you’ll find Airbnbs and guesthouses. Staying there keeps you within a 10-minute drive of the beach without paying Maho resort prices.

Where to stay near Maho Beach by travel type:

If you’re wondering where to stay near Maho Beach, several Maho Beach resorts and hotels put you steps from the runway, the bars, and the nightlife.

  • Families: Sonesta Maho Beach Resort
  • Couples & adults-only luxury: Sonesta Ocean Point Resort

This picturesque beach is situated on the western coast of Sint Maarten, near the Princess Juliana International Airport between Beacon Hill and Maho Village.

Maho Beach is generally safe, but caution is needed. The jet blasts from departing planes are powerful and can knock people over, so always keep a safe distance from the runway fence and follow posted warnings.

It is safe to swim at Maho Beach, but be cautious. The waves and jet blasts can be strong, so swimming is better at nearby Mullet Bay or Simpson Bay.

Yes, there are many restaurants and bars near Maho Beach. Popular spots include Sunset Bar & Grill for plane-watching, Driftwood Boat Bar for a local vibe, JAX Steakhouse for upscale dining, and casual options like 3 Amigos, Roma Restaurant, and The Hole in the Wall.

Planes are coming from early morning until evening. However, it is recommended to check the flight schedule to see when the really big planes are coming. Furthermore, if you are staying on the island, it is recommended to visit the beach when there are fewer cruise ship in port which you can check on the cruise ship terminal's website (see in the article).
