The island of St. Maarten / St. Martin is split between two distinct cultures — French Saint-Martin and Dutch Sint Maarten — each offering its own style of beaches, food, and hotels.
On one side, you’ll find laid-back boutique hotels and beach cafés. On the other, high-rise resorts, casinos, and all-inclusive options. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with kids, or solo, there’s a hotel on the island that fits your plans — and your budget.
This St. Maarten hotel guide breaks down the best resorts on the island by:
St. Maarten is one island with two personalities. The northern half, Saint-Martin, is French; the southern half, Sint Maarten, is Dutch. Both offer beautiful beaches, ocean views, and great places to stay, but the experience is different depending on which side you choose.

The French side is quieter and more relaxed. Think long lunches at beach cafés, boutique hotels with ocean views, and uncrowded coves where you can snorkel or read a book without much noise. It’s especially popular with couples and food lovers.
If you want a quieter trip with a French-Caribbean feel, this side is a good fit.
The Dutch side is busier and more built-up, with larger resorts, casinos, and cruise ship traffic. This is where you’ll find big-name hotels, all-inclusive deals, and nightlife that goes late.
If you want more entertainment, easy transportation, or you're traveling with a group, the Dutch side usually makes things simpler.
Choosing the right area can make or break your trip. Some places are perfect for food and beach hopping, others for nightlife or easy airport access. Here's a quick look at the best and safest areas to stay in St. Maarten and what each one offers.
| Neighborhood | Best For | Highlight |
|---|---|---|
| Marigot (French side) | Culture and shopping | Open-air markets, boutiques, ferry to Anguilla |
| Grand Case (French side) | Food and boutique stays | French-Caribbean cuisine, beachfront charm |
| Orient Bay (French side) | Watersports lovers | Lively beach scene, rentals, nude beach option |
| Philipsburg (Dutch side) | Shopping and cruise travelers | Duty-free shopping, boardwalk, Great Bay Beach |
| Simpson Bay (Dutch side) | Convenience | Central, airport access, affordable hotels |
| Maho & Cupecoy (Dutch side) | Entertainment and views | Plane landings, nightlife, luxury condos |
| Oyster Bay & Dawn Beach (Dutch side) | Quiet luxury and ocean views | Secluded beaches, upscale resorts, sunrise views |

Marigot is the French capital of St. Martin, known for its open-air markets, chic boutiques, and a touch of Parisian flair by the sea. It’s a great base for travelers who enjoy a mix of culture, history, and easy ferry access to Anguilla.

Grand Case is a small beach town on the French side known for its top-rated restaurants and peaceful beachfront hotels. It’s a favorite among couples, solo travelers, and anyone who prefers local charm over large resorts.

One of the most popular beaches on the island, Orient Bay is lined with casual restaurants, beach bars, and water sports rentals. The atmosphere is social but not rowdy—ideal for sun-seekers and windsurfers.

Philipsburg is the capital of the Dutch side and the island’s busiest cruise port. It’s known for its duty-free shops, lively boardwalk, and easy access to Great Bay Beach. Staying here is convenient if you want to be in the middle of the action, with plenty of restaurants and activities nearby.

Simpson Bay is one of the most central and practical places to stay. It’s close to the airport, has plenty of restaurants and shops, and offers a long, swimmable beach. It works well for families or travelers who want easy access to everything.

Maho is where you'll find the famous plane landings right overhead. It’s also home to large resorts, casinos, and beach clubs. Nearby Cupecoy is more upscale, with luxury condos and beautiful cliffs.

On the southeastern coast, Oyster Bay and neighboring Dawn Beach offer a more secluded escape. The area has a few upscale resorts, villas, and timeshares, with beautiful views of St. Barth’s across the water. It’s ideal for travelers who want a peaceful stay away from the busier parts of the island.
There are a few sketchy areas where safety can be an issue at night, and some that should be avoided during the day as well.
Unfortunately, there have been some incidents in Grand Case as well, which is one of the most recommended areas to stay in. It is completely safe during the day, but do not walk off the main road (beach side) at night. While police presence has been increased, it's best to remain cautious.
It's safe to drive through these neighborhoods (on the main road only!), but do not walk around there even during the day. There has been much unrest, and it's home to some shady people. Most people agree that it's best to avoid Sandy Ground and Nettle Bay completely.
| Neighborhood | Risk Level | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Marigot | Caution at night | Safe during the day, but avoid walking off the main road after dark |
| Philipsburg | Caution at night | Busy cruise port, but some areas unsafe late at night |
| Center areas | Caution at night | Less touristy, limited police presence |
| Grand Case | Isolated incidents | Popular spot, but stay on main beach road at night |
| Nettle Bay | Avoid anytime | High crime area, unsafe to walk even in daylight |
| Sandy Ground | Avoid anytime | High crime area, unsafe to walk even in daylight |

Once you’ve picked where to stay, it helps to know what to expect — weather-wise, transportation-wise, and activity-wise. Here’s what to keep in mind when planning your trip to St. Maarten in 2025.
St. Maarten has warm weather year-round, but timing matters.
Pro tip: November is underrated — just before high season pricing kicks in, but after peak hurricane threats.
Driving is the easiest way to explore both sides of the island.
If you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort, you might not need a car — but if you want to explore, it's worth renting for a few days.
St. Maarten is casual and beach-focused, but here are a few extras that come in handy:
The Dutch side (Sint Maarten) has more all-inclusive resorts, high-rise hotels, and nightlife. The French side (Saint-Martin) is known for boutique hotels, quiet villas, and a stronger culinary scene. Both offer beachfront properties, but your choice depends on whether you want convenience and energy (Dutch) or charm and tranquility (French) in 2025.
As of mid-2025, there are no true all-inclusive resorts permanently operating on the French side. Secrets St. Martin was the last option, but it closed on May 31, 2025, for renovations and has no confirmed reopening date . If you're set on an all-inclusive experience, you'll need to book on the Dutch side.
There are three all-inclusive resorts in St. Maarten on the Dutch side:
Many boutique hotels, villas, and condo-style resorts offer kitchenettes or full kitchens—especially popular on the French side where dining out is part of the experience. Larger resorts and all-inclusives usually do not have in-room kitchens.
Simpson Bay (Dutch side) is one of the best areas for first-timers — it’s central, walkable, close to restaurants and beaches, and near the airport. Grand Case (French side) is a great alternative if you prefer a more relaxed, foodie-friendly vibe.
